Moving Guide

Your Florida Moving Guide

Moving to Florida or relocating within the state? This comprehensive guide covers everything you need to know to make your transition as smooth as possible – from updating your address and transferring utilities to understanding Florida’s unique tropical climate and lifestyle.

Before You Move

Set Up Utilities: Contact Florida utility providers to establish service at your new address. Key providers vary by area – Tampa Electric (TECO), Duke Energy, FPL, or JEA depending on your location. Schedule connections at least two days before move-in, especially during summer when AC is essential.

Update Your Address: File a change of address with the USPS, update your driver’s license at the Florida DHSMV (you have 30 days after establishing residency), and notify your bank, insurance providers, and other important contacts.

Renter’s Insurance: We strongly recommend obtaining a renter’s insurance policy before moving in. Florida-specific coverage may include hurricane and flood protection – standard policies often exclude flood damage, so consider adding separate flood insurance.

Moving Day Tips

Plan for Rain: Florida’s summer months bring daily afternoon thunderstorms. Schedule your move for early morning and have tarps ready to protect furniture and boxes during transit. Humidity can also affect electronics and sensitive items.

Document Your Move-In: When you arrive at your new rental, take photos and videos of every room to document the property’s condition. Submit your move-in condition report to Lux Management Group within 48 hours to protect your security deposit.

Settling Into Florida Life

Hurricane Preparedness: Florida’s hurricane season runs from June through November. Familiarize yourself with your county’s evacuation zones, stock emergency supplies, and know how to protect your rental home. Your Lux Management team will communicate any property-specific hurricane preparation steps.

Explore Your Neighborhood: Florida offers world-class beaches, theme parks, outdoor recreation, and cultural experiences. Take time to explore local attractions, farmers markets, waterfront dining, and community events. Check out our Neighborhood Guide for more details.
